How to Write Resumes For Education Careers

The education field is one of few out there that is still managing relatively well in the midst of the recession. However, this doesn’t mean that snagging a great job will be a piece of cake. It may still require some work, especially in terms of creating a great resume.

So if you have already acquired your education degree, are certified to teach, and are looking for your first education job – or are thinking of leaving your current position and want something new – it’s a good idea to learn how to get your education resume in order. The good news is that it’s easier than you think. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Get Detailed With Your Certification Information

As an educator, it’s important to let any prospective employers know that you are certified to teach in your area of expertise. The best way to point this out is to list the certification information in your resume.

So exactly what certification information should be included? You want to list the state in which you were licensed to teach. Also, it’s a good idea to list the fields you are eligible to teach in (i.e. math, science, English, Spanish, etc.). And if you are certified for a specific grade level, you want to list this information as well.

Don’t Forget about the Other Extras

One thing that makes you unique as an education employee is the certificates and licenses that you may acquire along your journey. Many employees only have work experience to list, but you have these items, plus more for hiring managers to consider.

This “more” might include your educational background and honors/awards, you might list professional associations and activities such as any research or publications you’ve been involved with. And if you have focuses in your career like coaching or multicultural education, be sure to mention these as well because they may give you a leg up on the competition.

What If I Haven’t Finished a Certain School?

When you’re listing your formal education, if you’re attending a certain school but haven’t completed your education there yet, you can still list it. For instance, if you’re working on your Masters degree then you can list the school, city and state of that school. On the next line, you can note that you have 40 credits toward your Psychology degree. The same goes if you attended a school then transferred. However many credits you completed, you can still list them.

What About Length?

When you’re creating your resume, very often experts will tell you to keep yours to a length of one page. The same is true for education resumes; however, if you have to stretch it out some to two pages, this is perfectly acceptable. The main reason this is the case is because there are extra sections such as certifications, certificates and licenses, and more, to consider.

The good news is that creating your education resume is not much different than any other type of resume. There are just a few more details to include to help ensure that the person hiring you knows you’re fully qualified. If you include those details, you’ll have a great resume to submit for consideration.

Use Of Technology To Get Educated Online

Now there’s a way for working adults to obtain a degree that requires a person to log onto a computer and connect to the Internet. Technology has allowed full-time employees to achieve that same four-year degree that every incoming young freshman is achieving nowadays. This method can be done while at work, in school computer labs, or at the privacy of your own home. Online studies provide a number of learning options, in addition to classroom-based instruction. An example is, “Online Education”, when the instructor and student are separated by physical distance and technology. These course delivery formats are designed to offer the working adult the greatest flexibility in planning their academic schedule. Many of these formats use the latest technological advances to bring teachers and students at different locations together, while others enable to complete course requirements without classroom attendance.

Both the student and the faculty play a huge part in the success of the online education. The primary role of the student is to learn. In order to learn, the student must be willing to be motivated, self disciplined, and able to analyze and apply the instructional content that is being taught. The problem sometimes is that the student tends to get discouraged because there is not face-to-face contact with the instructor and fellow students. In this case, the student needs to be willing to adapt to the required conditions, and carry on with the course instructions. A friend of mine once said that the success of any online education is entirely up to the professor that is teaching. The instructor has many responsibilities that they must follow in order to assure a good outcome of online education. They must develop an understanding of the characteristics and needs of the students with first-hand experience and maybe even some face-to-face contact that does not occur very often. They must be willing to adapt and take into consideration the needs and expectations of the students. Most importantly, they must develop a working understanding of the technology, while still remaining focused with their teaching. Many people always wonder what the difference is between a classroom taught class and a online education class.

Classroom instructors use a great deal of visual cues from their students to enhance the way a particular subject is taught. Sometimes the instructor notices the people who are paying close attention, and those who are taking notes. They may notice a student that is confused or frustrated by their facial expressions. By having the face-to-face teaching, the instructor can adjust the delivery of the information to fit the needs of the students. By taking a online education class, the cues are no longer there. The instructor may never know who is having a problem or who needs additional help with the subject. That is why it is so important to constantly provide the feedback that is necessary to get the students through a problem. Some ways of effective feedback is for the instructor to require the students to contact them by either e-mail or in the conference area. By making it a requirement, many students will in fact state what problems they might be having. Another way of feedback is for the instructor to arrange telephone office hours so the students can call when a problem may exist. Feedback and communication are some of the most important attributes of online education.

The number one tool used for online education is the World Wide Web. According to the computer dictionary, the Internet is the world’s largest, most powerful computer network, connecting personal computers, sophisticated mainframes, and high-speed supercomputers around the globe. The Internet is perhaps the most transformative technology in history, reshaping business, media, entertainment, and society in astonishing ways. But for all its power, it is just now being tapped to transform education. The Internet is a tool that empowers society to teach the illiterate, bring job training to the unskilled, open a universe of wonderful images and knowledge to all students, and enrich the understanding of the lifelong learner. The good news is that the Internet is bringing us closer than ever thought possible to make learning- of all kinds, at all levels, any time, any place, any pace- a dream come true for every man, woman, and child. The bad news is that millions still cannot access the Internet and do not understand how to use it to take advantage of the global web of knowledge.

Online education is a great way for the working adult to receive their degree without having to attend a classroom full-time. It is the new future for education, and in my opinion will soon be the only way to obtain a degree for most working adults. It is extremely hard to make it far in a career without having that degree to back you up. Now days, employers are looking for a degree as a complete necessity, and the bare minimum for an interview. People just have to sit down and see that obtaining a degree can be done, and it is possible no matter what situation they may be in. If this era of globalization has proven anything, it is that a growing world economy can create a strong and lasting demand for skilled knowledge workers and a technologically savvy workforce. But we haven’t made the connection to education. We must seize the opportunities and complete these connections- technological and human. And we must advance with constant assessment and reflection. There is still much about learning and the impact of technology we do not know.

We must continue to research what is not known, analyze what is proposed or in progress, and then examine the results. We also must merge our belief in the large value of these advances with admiration for the difficulties that we face: the difference of access and shortage of teacher preparedness for web-based education. In short, the online education is not a worldwide cure for every problem in education. We require being practical. But we also must understand that the Internet is a key that can help us give power to every student and raise each individual to new levels of intellectual capability and skill. That is the great chance of this new technology. The authority and the guarantee are here. It is now time to shift from promise to implication.

Grants For Schools: Lots of Homework for Educators

Educational grants are not impossible to obtain. In fact, if you put in the effort, I can virtually assure that your school can get a grant. But free money is not easy to get, there is a long and almost tedious process.

The good news is that getting an educational grant is very possible for you. The bad news is that the process is not easy. However, because it is not easy to get a grant, many people do not bother to try. It will take patience, attention to detail, and creativity to be on the winning side.

Incidentally, the definition of an educational grant is anytime a person or organization is willing to give your school or educational program something you need to do something you want for the benefit of your students. Grants are not always money. Sometimes they come in the form of what is called “in kind gifts”–like computers or science lab equipment.

Grantors want educational results, they want their educational grants to create marked changes in the students and their learning. Focusing in on your real needs, i.e. things required to make learning possible is the most difficult step in the grant process. The key to getting help is to ask grantors who want the same results as you do. You need to look to the core of your problems. What are your classroom needs? You must be able to answer this question in one sentence before you move on.

Who Should I Ask?

There are several types of grantors that give educational grants. And some are harder to get to than others. Therefore, persistence is key. Most people do not want to go through the work that is required to get a grant. But if you don’t try, you’ll never get a grant.

Ask the principal:

If you have passion and motivation to get something you need, you have a good chance of convincing the principal that it is worth the spending. If you invest some of your own money, you have a better chance because it shows commitment to your desire for a teacher grant.

Approach the school district:

You may immediately think that you can not do this…why? Isn’t what you want to do desirable? Check with the principal and find out how to approach the superintendent or school board, just follow the appropriate school protocol and ask.

Ask the local government:

Local politicians know where the money is, and it is surprising to find out how much is around. A politician who sees an opportunity for publicity through teacher grants will often be helpful in your search for funding.

Ask the supplies State government:

For example, the New York State Legislature gives out money in state legislative grants. Members are allocated funds for their districts. So tell the state government about your ideas for an educational grant.

Ask the Federal Government:

Every day the government lists programs, including teacher grants, in the Federal Register.

Ask a Foundation:

Thousands of foundations want to give money, and they have billions of dollars to work with. Find those foundations that share your goals. Use the Foundation Center as a source, or newsletters that offer regular suggestions on who is offering educational grants.

Ask a Local Company:

Local businesses are another good source. Banks are particularly good places to start.

Some tips:

a) Always follow school and district rules.

b) There is specific grant jargon you must interpret correctly. Read the grant description several times. Call to clarify any points that you are not sure of. Mention what you have in mind and ask if he or she thinks it would be “competitive.” The word competitive is part of the grant jargon that is very important.

c) Do some search to see if your problem is already being approached somewhere else. Find out how others have reached their goals for education grants of similar concerns.

d) Think of the grant application as a test. You will be asked to repeat information. No matter what, leave out nothing that is asked for.

e) Submit your proposal on time. Follow the instructions. If you do not do this, your
education grant application might not even be read, let alone considered by the grantors.

f) Complete the proposal and put it aside for a few days. Then read it over again and make changes if you need to. Ask others to proofread for you–just in case.

g) Be sure to check prices and anticipate that prices will increase. Be careful what you ask for and make sure the amount of your education grant will suit your needs.

h) Remember, if you do not ask, you definitely will not get your education grants.
